On May 15, 2017, the inauguration ceremony of the newly-constructed Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) was held at Koramangala and Challaghatta (K&C) Valley STP in Bengaluru. Its capacity is 60 Million Litres per Day (MLD). The plant is expected to help improve the sanitation and environmental condition of the rapidly growing city.
The inauguration ceremony was presided by Mr. Siddaramaiah, Hon’ble Chief Minister, and attended by dignitaries including Mr. K.J. George, Hon’ble Minster of Bangalore Development & Town Planning, Government of Karnataka, Mr. Tushar Girinath, Chairman, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), Mr. Takayuki Kitagawa, Consul-General, Consulate General of Japan in Bengaluru, Mr. Kenko Sone, Minister, Embassy of Japan in India, and Mr. Takema Sakamoto, Chief Representative, JICA India Office, among others.
The soft loan provided by Japan for the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Project (Phase II-2), including the construction of K&C valley STP, amounts to 28,358 million Japanese Yen (approximately Rs.1,688 crore). The cumulative loan commitment for water supply and sewerage projects in Bengaluru adds up to 98,807 million Japanese Yen (approximately Rs. 5,880 crore). These projects are being implemented by BWSSB, Government of Karnataka. The Phase II-2 Project assists the construction of 10 STPs, rehabilitation of sewer network, reduction of non-revenue water (NRW), installation of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system which enables remote control and monitoring of the facilities, and consulting services to the Project as well as to BWSSB. The Phase II-2 Project also includes a slum development component, raising awareness of the residents, along with installation of water distribution and sewerage infrastructure, in addition to a focus on women’s participation.
Effective sewage disposal is really indispensable for people’s healthy and comfortable life and water environment conservation. Japan is also cooperating in the Bengaluru Metro Project through soft loans, and is currently doing the preparatory survey for the grant project for Implementation of Advanced Traffic Information and Management System in Core Bengaluru. Water supply, waste water treatment and urban transportation are important elements to transform Bengaluru into a smart city. Japan feels honored in contributing towards the inclusive and dynamic development of Bengaluru through its various projects. It is hoped that this inaugurated project will serve as a symbol of goodwill and friendly relations between the peoples of Japan and India.
